Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.Īs is the same in a lot of aspects, my level of risk-taking varies between my personal and work life. As someone that grew up in musical theater from early childhood, public speaking and performance have been some of my greatest joys and assets. Gaining experience from this, I’ve gone on to serve as talent and/or scriptwriter for three commercials and two fundraising videos – all professionally produced. Over about six months, we had a weekly segment on local news station WBIR, where I taught simple lessons and activities that families could partake in at home. This started with simple press releases and media interviews but steadily grew throughout the last two years. From there, my position has grown into more of a conceptualization and strategy role, adding in more high-level projects like budget and team management, all ad creative, donor communications.īy far, my favorite piece of the role is being the spokesperson for Muse. This turned out to be a huge success and allowed us to serve more families than ever before.Ĭan you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?Īs the Marketing and Communications Manager for a smaller nonprofit, I kind of specialize in everything! Starting out, my main focus was on social media and basic graphic design. This in combination with wanting to increase our operational footprint anyway, we decided to open a satellite location in West Town Mall.

Since we didn’t know when we would be able to reopen, we started thinking through new options on how to get our programming into the hands of kids. Our planetarium alone took on over eight inches of water, resulting in the loss of paperwork and equipment, in addition to thousands of dollars world of building damage. Knoxville took on historic amounts of rain, which flooded our parking lot, playground, outdoor spaces, planetarium, and more. One of our largest roadblocks was closure for flooding in February of 2019. Like most other nonprofits, we’ve definitely had some struggles! We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road? We have now reopened to the public, and are excited to launch new programming initiatives and continue to serve our community through our current mission: to inspire and empower all children through transformative learning experiences. We also served our community by creating take-home STEM boxes, and Learning Pods – where kids could complete their virtual schooling in our safe and contained museum space. However, during our seven-month closure of Muse Knoxville in Chilhowee Park, we were able to improve on our museum spaces, adding three new exhibits, improved bathrooms, and more. After suffering from financial losses due to lost admission, we had to close Muse at the Mall permanently. In March of 2020, we closed both of our locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the second location, our organization became known as Muse Knoxville. This allowed us to have a space for more visitors to experience hands-on learning. Wanting to serve more families, we decided to open a satellite location at West Town Mall, called Muse at the Mall, in April of 2019. We added new outdoor play spaces, updated paint, and new exhibit galleries through public and private funding. The newly merged organization was named The Muse Knoxville and established the mission to inspire and empower generations at the intersection of science and art.Īfter merging, The Muse Knoxville made improvements to the former East Tennessee Discovery Center building. Our story is an interesting and multi-faceted one! Put simply, The MUSE of Knoxville was chartered in 2011 and merged with the East Tennessee Discovery Center in 2013. Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story. Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Eberhart.
